Obituary of Norma June MacTavish

Norma (Nomie) MacTavish was the only child born to Willa and Ingolf Savig on February 20, 1939. She was born in the Old St Joseph Hospital in Dawson Creek. In the first 6 years of her life the family moved from Upper Cutbank to Bonanza area and finally settled in Rolla, BC. Having no siblings and rarely able to see her cousins from Saskatchewan, Nomie absorbed many of the people of Rolla as her family. She has fond memories of her mother running the Post Office and her dad making the ice for the Curling Rink. One story she tells is about her Dad being so upset with the birds bathing in the puddles on the ice and making a mess for him. That was what you got with natural iceno ice plants back then. Her mother Willa was a lover of music and dance, Nomie was always tagging along at a very early age when Willa played for area dances. Her teen years were a whirlwind of dances and friends. Her passion for music and dance only grew as she aged. Her dad was a strong handsome Norwegian and a stubborn competitor in anything he took part in. Nomie had his competitive nature and loved to curl through much of her life. She was a person that competed to win but when she lost she would say "We came in second" I don't think there is an area big enough to show the pictures of all the people that she curled with or the fun that they all had after the games! Nomie married Marnel MacTavish on December 26, 1959. Marnel came from a large family and now Nomie had the brothers and sisters that she missed during her childhood. She was an instant Aunty to so many and she loved it. Lori was born in 1961 and Grant was born 1962. Another natural gift that Nomie had was being a MOTHER. She loved her children and did everything in her power to show it. As the kids grew, Nomie got back into the work force. She was an accomplished typist in those days and worked as a secretary at Frank Ross Junior High and then moved down to Central Junior High. She always said it was a job she loved dearly. She loved the people she worked with and kept in touch with them to present. Both Grant and Lori attended Central at that time, so any attempts to skip class or misbehave never seemed to pay off. Nomie worked for 25 years with the School Board and retired due to health issues. Nomie was awarded the Citizen of the Year award in 2002. She was very proud and very deserving of this award. Nomie has been an active force to be reckoned with. Very few have the energy to be involved with so many people and groups. She curled from the time she was 7 or maybe before. She took pride in the Club and was an active member serving as president for a time and always had teams in the league and bonspiels. She was part of the Dawson Creek line dancers and then branched off and began teaching her own group the Groov'n Grannies for extra fun. She was a part of the singing group Potluck Singers and has loved the friendship and fun that is involved with these lovely ladies. Red Hat Ladies is a group of fun-loving bright and bubbly ladies that Nomie was proud to be Queen Mother. She entertained faithfully through the years with her buddies Stan Brocke, Gus Jensen, Harry Beamer and others, at the different senior homes in town. Nomie passed away on Monday, December 26, 2011 in Dawson Creek at the age of 72 years. Nomie is survived by her loving husband; of 52 years Marnel, Daughter; Lori (Barry), Son; Grant, Granddaughters; Kirsten, Lindsay & Kelsey. Nomie is predeceased by her parents; Willa and Ingolf Savig. A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, December 31, 2011 at 1:00 pm at the Bethel Pentecostal Church, Dawson Creek. Rev. Barbara Pilozow officiated. Interment followed in the Brookside Cemetery. Nomie will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. The family wants to thank you for all the friendship, love and fun that you have added to Nomie's life and for all the support that you have shown to them at this difficult time. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Nomie to a Charity of your Choice. VeryRespectfully Reynars Funeral Home &Crematorium
