Obituary of Rosalie Campbell

Rose was born in Loon Lake Saskatchewan on January 27, 1931.She was the oldest daughter of Maria Gefri and Joseph Gerstel. Rose had seven siblings Martin Gerstel, Sigmund Gerstel, John Gerstel, Otto Gerstel, Elizabeth Campbell, Christina Merry and Stephanie Hora. She met Dougal Campbell in Emberville, Saskatchewan and they were married on June 10, 1948 in Lloydminister, Saskachewan. Rose and Dougal farmed in Emberville, where their oldest three children Edward, Bernice, and William were born. In 1954, Rose and Dougal moved their family to Little Prairie, BC where they completed their family with the younger three children Mervin, Larry and Lana. Rose and Dougal lived in Little Prairie which by then had become known as Chetwynd. Rose was involved in many organizations. In 1954, she became a member of The Little Prairie Ladies Club. The club helped fund and organize many community events including fundraising for the library and the building of the Legion and Curling rink. In 1962, the family then moved 10 miles west of Chetwynd. Dougal was excited to own a piece of property without rocks, only to have Rose build an enormous rock garden. Over the years Rose worked at the Canfor log yard, waitressing at the Chetwynd Hotel, cooking for the PGE survey crews, night security at CFI, and she also devoted 22 years to the Chetwynd Hospital as a cook. Rose's faith was strong. She often attended church several days of the week. She was terrified of flying but her faith got her on a plane to make a pilgrimage to Medjugorje. Medjugorje cemented her faith even more. Family was important to Rose. Having the grandkids on the farm brought her joy. Showing them how to milk cows, raise goslings and even butcher the chickens. She loved the smiles, giggles and a little bit of teasing with family. Rose and Dougal lived on the farm until Dougal's untimely death in 1989. She never remarried. Rose remained an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, The Catholic Woman's league and parish community until her health no longer permitted.
