Obituary of Father Thomas Magusin O.M.I.

Father Tom Magusin O.M.I. formally of Farmington, B.C. passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 20, 2013 in Dawson Creek at the age of 85 years. Thomas Magusin was born on October 28, 1927 in Hostie, Slovakia to parents Tomas and Etela Magusin. His father preceded the family to Canada and in 1932 Tom, his mother and older brother, Joe joined him on the homestead in Farmington, B.C. Tom took his first eight years of education in the one room Parkland school and then stayed home on the family farm, logging and working in the sawmill for about 15 years. He then felt called to resume his education and to work for his church. He was ordained a Catholic priest in the Oblate order in 1980 and served parishes in Kitimat, Lillooet, Prince George and Dawson Creek. In the last years he often served as a temporary replacement in parishes when pastors were away. Fr. Tom kept his family close in prayer and joined family events, often officiating at weddings of nephews and nieces. He was a quiet, supportive presence in times of loss. On the day of his burial, the church bell tolled in the village of Hostie, where he was born, in remembrance of him. Tom was predeceased by his parents, sister Etela and husband Bill Strasky, his brothers-in-law; Charles Finkle and Arthur Keenan. Tom is survived by his siblings; Joe and Julie Magusin, Betty Finkle, Teresa Keenan, Peter and Margaret Magusin and Anna Magusin, 24 nieces and nephews and extended family in Europe, USA and Canada. A prayer service was held on Sunday, October 27, at 8:00 pm at the Notre Dame Catholic Church 908-104th Avenue, Dawson Creek, B.C. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, October 28, at 10:00 am at Notre Dame Catholic Church. Fr. Richard Beaudette O.M.I. officiated. Interment followed in the Mountainview Cemetery, Sunrise Valley. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Father Tom to the Rotary Manor 1121-90th Avenue, Dawson Creek, B.C.
