Joseph was born on Wednesday, September 26, 1934, in Woodstock Ontario to John and Agnes Furtenbacher (nee Frank).  He attended Ryerson Polytechnical institute and worked for Canadian National Telecommunications throughout his career.

Joe met the love of his life, Laurene Simpson, and they were married on May 2, 1980.  Joe and Rene moved to Chetwynd, British Columbia in 1993. They greatly enjoyed all the birds and wildlife on their rural property. Joe enjoyed golf with his “dinosaur clubs”. He was also an avid and skilled photographer, a hunter, and belonged to many bowling leagues over the years. He enjoyed tending his plants and caring for his beloved dogs.

Joe was predeceased by his loving wife Laurene on December 26, 2019; his stepson Daniel Simpson; and granddaughter Zoe.

Joe was the loving father of Mary Ann Kuiack, Joseph Furtenbacher, Judith Furtenbacher (Bob Horvath) and Roberta Bond (David); loving stepfather of Deborah Simpson, Daniel Simpson (deceased) and Laurie Simpson (Tye Hoover); beloved grandfather of Eric (Taryn), Mark, Steven, Laura (Matthew), Anna (Michael), Isaac (Janien), Thomas, and Natalie, Clifton (Tatyana), Quinleigh (Rueben), Micah, Chloe, Ellie, Zoë (deceased), Georgie and Tavian; much loved step-grandfather to Tarah (Brian), Sadie (Garret), Jonathan, Kyle (Beverly), Zak (Ashley), Michael and Connor.
