Obituary of Jason Grey

Jason "Jay" Albert Grey

Kihew Napis ~ Golden Eagle Boy

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jason Albert Grey who was the innocent victim of a motor vehicle accident.

Jason was predeceased by his father Joseph Grey from Atikameg, Alberta; siblings James Grey and Steven Grey; paternal grandparents Noel Grey and Mary Bones Grey of Atikameg, Alberta; maternal grandparents Freddy Andrews and Marie Alook from Wabasca, Alberta; and his father in-law Edward Stephenson.

Jason will be loved and missed by his children Jaytin and Angelina; Angelina’s mom Yvette; mother Gladys (John); siblings Douglas, George (Cindy), Patricia and Francine; mother-in-law Cecilia; brothers in law Mike (Adam), Mitch (Sophia), CJ (Melissa); nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; as well as countless friends and extended family members.

Jason was a deeply spiritual, sensitive and empathetic individual who would be the first to give the shirt off his back to anyone that needed help. He was an inter-generational residential school survivor, whose both parents and grandparents were forced by the Government to attend, disrupting family and community relationships and ways of life. Jason was a living embodiment of the harm inflicted upon the Indigenous Peoples of Canada.

Despite such insurmountable obstacles, Jason found strength and healing in ceremonial and cultural practices. He was a beautiful singer and a Sundancer. He sang with the ceremonial drum group of Darcy Demas, Oceanside Dakota Demas. He Sundanced with Cree Elder and Sundance Chief Tom Mc Callum. In 2011 he was ceremonially adopted into the Charlie Longhouse in Sts’Ailes by Pat Charlie and William Charlie Sr.

Jason was a person with a contagious love and passion for life. He deeply loved his family and his community. He had a strong work ethic and enjoyed working as a plumber. Some of his notable projects include building new developments such as student housing at the University of British Columbia, the expansion project of BC Children’s Hospital and the addition of the new glass tower to the Vancouver Stock Exchange heritage building.

Jason leaves the world two bright lights and priceless treasures, his children, Jaytin and Angelina. Jason’s strongest wish was to pass on a legacy of love and pride to his children, and for them to live happy and fulfilled lives. He held them in his heart in the highest regard and thought of them daily. Jason will be deeply missed. May his spirit continue to soar as he rests in eternal peace and happiness.

For those so wishing, Jason’s family welcomes you to say prayers and offer prayer services for the spirit and soul of Jason, in alignment with your cultural and spiritual practices.
