Obituary of Margaret Elizabeth Pierce

Margaret Elizabeth Pierce was born 89 years ago on June 20, 1920 in Whitsett, Pennsylvania. Grandma was part of a huge, wonderful family made up of 4 brothers and 6 sisters. Irene, Shirley, Albert, Bill, Elsie, Alex, Ethel, Joe, Julia and Helen. In 1922 Grandma's family moved briefly from Pennsylvania back to Hungary and then in 1924 they moved back to Canada. Their first stop was Halifax, Nova Scotia. Then they moved to Lethbridge and then onto the Peace River Country. It was in the Peace River Country that Grandma grew up and loved to dance. And it was on one of those nights that Grandma and her older siblings would sneak out to go to a country dance that she met that curly haired hunk of a man named Gordon...or Grandpa to me. Well one square dance led to another and the next thing you knew the two got married in 1939 in Sweetwater. Grandma and Grandpa later moved to 7 Mile Corner from 1947 to 1949. And finally moved to Dawson Creek in 1949, where Grandpa worked at sawmills most of his life while Grandma stayed home and looked after their 3 kids…Anne, Gerald and Eugene. When the kids were finally old enough to be left alone Grandma began working at the Windsor Hotel from 1966 until she retired. It was a very physically demanding job for her and I remember seeing her come home totally exhausted. Unfortunately Grandpa passed away way too young in 1976 from a heart attack and Grandma would have to live the remaining 32 years alone…but she was not alone…she had the wonderful support and care of her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and especially her 3 children,10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Finally in 2001 Grandma moved to Edmonton where she continued to be cared for and played such a huge part in Eugene and my mom's families. Grandma passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2009 in Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 89 years. A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 1:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Chapel. Rev Elizabeth Gillott officiated. Interment was held on Monday, July 20, 2009 in the Dawson Creek City Cemetery. Eulogy presented by Margaret's grandson Barry McNabb Very Respectfully, Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium
